The reason that I make this video is because I’ve heard too many times that my students made the same mistake with this grammar. No matter which level they have achieved.Some students have passed HSK 5,but sometimes,they still couldn’t express this type of sentences properly.
Chinese Grammar: IF/Whether or Not in Chinese [do NOT use 如果RuGuo]
dānɡ jù zi de yì si biǎo shì bú què dìnɡ
当 句 子 的 意 思 表 示 不 确 定
huò zhě xū yào xuǎn zé shí ，
或 者 需 要 选 择 时 ，
wǒ men chánɡ chánɡ yònɡ “ dònɡ cí +not+ dònɡ cí ”
我 们 常 常 用 “ 动 词 +not + 动 词 ”
When the meaning of the sentence is about unsure whether or not,having choices,or two alternatives,we usually use “ verb+not+verb If/whether or not “
dàn shì zài zhōnɡ wén lǐ ，
但 是 在 中 文 里 ，
zhè zhǒnɡ qínɡ kuànɡ ，
这 种 情 况 ，
wǒ men bù nénɡ yònɡ “ rú ɡuǒ ”
我 们 不 能 用 “ 如 果 ”
But in Chinese,in this case,we do NOT use “rú ɡuǒ如果 ”

For instance:
1. wǒ bù zhī dào tā mínɡ tiān yào bu yào lái 。
1. 我 不 知 道 他 明 天 要 不 要 来 。
I don’t know if/whether he is coming tomorrow.
Please do NOT say:
wǒ bù zhī dào rú ɡuǒ tā mínɡ tiān lái 。
我 不 知 道 如 果 他 明 天 来
2.wǒ bú què dìnɡ mínɡ tiān huì bu huì xià yǔ 。
2.我 不 确 定 明 天 会 不 会 下 雨。
I’m not sure if/whether it’s going to rain tomorrow.
Please do NOT say:
wǒ bú què dìnɡ rú ɡuǒ mínɡ tiān xià yǔ
我 不 确 定 如 果 明 天 下 雨
3. xiàn zài hái bú tài qīnɡ chu tā nénɡ bu nénɡ ná dào qiān zhènɡ。
3. 现 在 还 不 太 清 楚 他 能 不 能 拿 到 签 证 。
Now it’s still not clear that if/whether he can get the visa.
Please do NOT say:
xiàn zài hái bú tài qīnɡ chu rú ɡuǒ tā nénɡ ná dào qiān zhènɡ 。
现 在 还 不 太 清 楚 如 果 他 能 拿 到 签 证 。
4. yī shenɡ yě bù nénɡ bǎo zhènɡ shǒu shù nénɡ bu nénɡ chénɡ ɡōnɡ。
4. 医 生 也 不 能 保 证 手 术 能 不 能 成 功 。
Also the doctor can’t guarantee that if/whether the surgery will be successful.
Please do NOT say:
yī shenɡ yě bù nénɡ bǎo zhènɡ shǒu shù rú ɡuǒ nénɡ chénɡ ɡōnɡ。
医 生 也 不 能 保 证 手 术 如 果 能 成 功 。
5. Tā hái méi jué dìnɡ yào bu yào mǎi nà liànɡ chē 。
5. 他 还 没 决 定 要 不 要 买 那 辆 车 。
He has not decided yet if/whether he will buy that car.
Please do NOT say:
tā hái méi jué dìnɡ rú ɡuǒ yào mǎi nà liànɡ chē 。
他 还 没 决 定 如 果 要 买 那 辆 车 。
6. tā dān xīn nénɡ bu nénɡ kǎo shànɡ nà ɡè dà xué 。
6. 他 担 心 能 不 能 考 上 那 个 大 学 。
He worries if/whether he can get into that college.
Please do NOT say:
tā dān xīn rú ɡuǒ nénɡ kǎo shànɡ nà ɡè dà xué 。
他 担 心 如 果 能 考 上 那 个 大 学 。
7. rén men huái yí xīn wén de nèi rónɡ shì bu shì zhēn de 。
7. 人 们 怀 疑 新 闻 的 内 容 是 不 是 真 的 。
People doubt that if/whether the contents of news are true.
Please do NOT say:
rén men huái yí xīn wén de nèi rónɡ rú ɡuǒ shì zhēn de 。
人 们 怀 疑 新 闻 的 内 容 如 果 是 真 的 。
8. rànɡ wǒ xiǎnɡ xiǎnɡ yào bu yào qǔ xiāo yù yuē 。
让 我 想 想 要 不 要 取 消 预 约 。
Let me think if/whether I need to cancel the appointment.
Please do NOT say:
rànɡ wǒ xiǎnɡ xiǎnɡ rú ɡuǒ yào qǔ xiāo yù yuē 。
让 我 想 想 如 果 要 取 消 预 约 。
9. qǐnɡ kǎo lǜ yí xià yào bu yào jiā rù wǒ men duì 。
请 考 虑 一 下 要 不 要 加 入 我 们 队 。
Please consider if/whether you want to join our team.
Please do NOT say:
nǐ kǎo lǜ yí xià rú ɡuǒ yào jiā rù wǒ men duì 。
你 考 虑 一 下 如 果 要 加 入 我 们 队 。
10. qǐnɡ ɡào su wǒ men kě bu ké yǐ zài zhè ér tínɡ chē 。
10. 请 告 诉 我 们 可 不 可 以 在 这 儿 停 车 。
Please tell us if/whether we can park our car here.
Please do NOT say:
qǐnɡ ɡào su wǒ men rú ɡuǒ ké yǐ zài zhè ér tínɡ chē 。
请 告 诉 我 们 如 果 可 以 在 这 儿 停 车 。
11. wǒ bú jì dé wǒ yǒu méi yǒu ná yào shi 。
11. 我 不 记 得 我 有 没 有 拿 钥 匙 。
I don’t remember if/whether I took my keys.
Please do NOT say:
wǒ bú jì dé rú ɡuǒ wǒ yǒu ná yào shi 。
我 不 记 得 如 果 我 有 拿 钥 匙 。
